UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE, WORKING WELL SUPERVISOR TRAINING COURSE

A SHORT COURSE FOR SUPERVISORS WORKING IN THE RESOURCES SECTOR

These Supervisor short courses from The University of Newcastle will launch in March this year. These courses are for anyone who works in the resources sector in a supervisor/management capacity and is interested in learning about how to manage staff experiencing mental health related problems and to build appropriate skills in responding to these issues.

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction and overview of the issues relevant to managing staff experiencing mental health problems and to build skills in responding to these issues. The training provides background information on mental health and mental illness using different scenarios that aim to build the supervisor’s skills and capacity to address mental health problems in the staff they supervise.

Topics covered include:
• Understanding the difference between mental health, mental health problems and mental illness;
• How to recognise the signs that someone is experiencing difficulties in the workplace;
• Identify supports that can be recommended to a person experiencing mental health problems;
• How to conduct a discussion with a team member about mental health problems at work; and
• Knowledge of legislative responsibilities and organisational policies relevant to mental health management in the workplace.

Impact of training:
Supervisors who have completed this course felt that it contained useful content for their role as a supervisor and also demonstrated a greater willingness of supervisors to start a conversation with a workmate about their mental health.

These courses will be run locally (Hunter Valley NSW), however they could also have potential to be facilitated onsite.
