Award to recognise good design for work health and safety

Safe Work Australia has partnered with Good Design Australia to present the Safe Work Australia Award for Good Design as part of the 2016 Good Design Awards.

The Safe Work Australia Award for Good Design will raise awareness of how good design can support work health and safety.

A focus on health and safety in design helps eliminate hazards and risks before they enter the workplace by improving the design of products, structures, equipment and substances, work processes and systems.

“Considering safety in design is important because well-designed work can prevent work-related deaths, injuries and illnesses,” Safe Work Australia CEO Michelle Baxter said.

“The most effective design process begins at the earliest opportunity during the conceptual and planning phases. Effective work design considers how work is performed, the physical working environment, and the workers themselves.”

The Good Design Award categories encompass product, service, digital, communication, architectural and business model design, and social innovation.

“These Awards are about recognising the important role that design plays in taking innovative ideas and transforming them into commercially successful outcomes,” Dr Brandon Gien from Good Design Australia said.

“We want to attract the very best in design and innovation and promote these examples to the world – inspiring others to adopt a design-led approach to the way they operate.”

The Safe Work Australia Award for Good Design will be selected from finalists in the annual Good Design Awards and will be judged against specific criteria including safety in construction, use and maintenance, safety innovation and health and safety impact.

Online registrations close on April 15, with winners announced on May 27.
