Bechtel wins national safety award for Curtis Island GLNG project

Bechtel has been recognised for its commitment to safety on the GLNG plant project with a National Safety Award of Excellence from the National Safety Council of Australia.

Bechtel is designing and building the GLNG liquefaction plant and associated infrastructure for Australian company Santos and its partners on Curtis Island in Queensland.

The awards are Australia’s longest-running, independent recognition program that honours outstanding health and safety initiatives in the workplace.

“The Australian National Safety Award of Excellence recognises engagement by our colleagues and managers working together to develop a world-class safety culture on the project,” said Alasdair
Cathcart, general manager of Bechtel’s LNG business line.

“This recognition is a testament to our team’s commitment to always stay true to our values: performing good-quality work safely, to the
highest ethical standard.”

Bechtel’s GLNG project team developed an innovative program called the Safety League to create a long-term, sustainable safety culture. Borrowing from rugby league, the program uses teams and easily-understood sports terminology and concepts to motivate people and reward safe behaviours.

The program also benefits the community by donating money to local charities on behalf of the teams that successfully completing safety challenges. Since the program’s inception, the company has given
$110,000 to organisations in the Gladstone area.
