CBH Resources of Broken Hill has taken out the sixth SA Mines Emergency Response Competition which was held in Broken Hill at the weekend.
Claiming the Skills, Breathing Apparatus and Best Captain categories, CBH Resources proved to be the best overall team, displaying a high level of skill and expertise to ensure their victory.
This year’s South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) annual SA Mines Emergency Response Competition provided some friendly rivalry for local mining companies, but more importantly an excellent opportunity to practice emergency response skills in a safe but realistic environment.

“The competition provides critical skill and training development for mine emergency response personnel, who are mostly volunteers, should they have to respond to a real event,” SACOME CEO Jason Kuchel said.
“So while it is a competition with winners, the primary purpose of the competition is to learn from each other and from the experienced emergency response trainers who adjudicate the events,
together with practicing and refining team work skills.”
The mining industry in Australia is one of the safest of all industries, reporting amongst the lowest number of accidents, yet the risks and opportunities for injury are great.
The event highlighted a strong commitment to safety across the industry is responsible for its good safety record and events such as this help to promote risk awareness, safety training, and keeping workplace safety the number one priority.
Events across the weekend included an underground search and rescue at Perilya’s Silver Peak mine, road crash rescue, first aid, vertical rescue and industrial rescue at Perilya’s disused north mine, breathing apparatus and firefighting at CBH Resources Rasp mine and skills held at Perilya’s offsite lake.
Perilya Health Safety and Environment manager Peter Lean was on hand across the weekend witnessing the high level of skills and teamwork displayed by the competitors.
“Every team approached the challenges with a positive attitude, caring for their own safety and the welfare of the casualties. Learning opportunities were embraced and the Sunday night dinner ensured the sharing of experiences and development of friendships between like-minded people,” Mr Lean said.
“The mining industry can rest easy in the knowledge that professional well trained people are supporting them should the need ever arise.”
This year an exhilarating Industrial Rescue was added to the schedule of events, where a dump truck under repair experiences a jack failure, with the vehicle falling and trapping a worker beneath the truck.
The annual competition is hosted by SACOME and put together by a team of volunteers from various organisations.
The South Australian resources industry is committed to the promotion of workplace safety and the implementation of effective WH&S programs.
