Equipment was damaged and bolts were removed from winches in what police believe is a deliberate sabotage attempt at an LNG construction site at Curtis Island off the coast of Gladstone.
Developers of the site, Bechtel, called Gladstone Police on Monday after evidence of equipment tampering first came to light.
Bechtel Gladstone general manager Kevin Berg told the Gladstone Observer that further investigation prompted suspicions the equipment had been “intentionally damaged”.
“A full inspection of the equipment across the site found further suspected tampering had occurred on the same equipment,” Mr Berg said.
Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said a number of devices had been missing nuts.
“Workplace Health and Safety are now conducting an investigation, and I’ll wait till I see the findings of that before I decide whether it’s a police matter,” Det Sen Sgt Peachey said.
The first sign of tampering was discovered during routine inspections and no injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.
Mr Berg said it was “extremely distressing” that someone might have deliberately put workmates at risk.
About 3000 workers are currently on the QCLNG project.
The $20?billion project is one of three LNG plants under construction on Curtis Island, and is due to deliver first gas next year.
