Guide to Preventing Workplace Violence Released

A guide on how to prevent and respond to violence in the workplace has been released by SafeWork SA.

The guide Preventing and Responding to Work-Related Violence (PDF 247 kb) has been developed to help people identify work-related violence hazards and find ways to eliminate or minimise the risks. This guide also provides pointers on how to prevent violent incidents in the workplace, as well as how to manage them is they should occur.

Workplace violence is any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work.

This definition covers a broad range of actions and behaviours that can create a risk to the health and safety of workers. Work-related violence can result in both physical and psychological injuries to workers, and cause significant economic and social costs to them, their family, the business where they work as well as the wider community. Examples of workplace violence include:

  • biting, spitting, scratching, hitting, kicking
  • punching, pushing, shoving, tripping, grabbing
  • throwing objects
  • verbal threats
  • aggravated assault
  • any form of indecent physical contact
  • threatening someone with a weapon or armed robbery.
