Head of Peabody Wins Global Award for Mine Safety

greg-boyceThe head of Peabody Energy has been recognised by the World Coal Association (WCA) for global leadership in mining safety.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gregory H. Boyce, was honored with the WCA Chairman’s Special Award, presented Monday at the World Coal Association board of directors meeting in Canberra.

The honor is a special designation from Dr. Zhang Xiwu, Chairman – World Coal Association and Chairman of Shenhua Group Corporation Limited of China.

The World Coal Association is the leading global industry association formed of major international coal producers and stakeholders.

“The WCA is pleased to recognise the global leadership role Greg has played in improving mine safety standards,” said Milton Catelin, World Coal Association Chief Executive. “The 2014 WCA Chairman’s Special Award recognises the importance of global leadership on mining safety and commends Greg for his significant work in this area.”

“The honor is a credit to the more than 8,300 Peabody Energy employees who make safety our shared value and way of life, who commit to a vision of incident-free workplaces and who take accountability for safe behavior and practices at work and away,” said Boyce. “All mining workers have a right to arrive home safe at the end of the day, and we must do everything we can to provide safe workplaces in the global mining sector.”

A statement released by Peabody says, “Peabody, under Boyce’s direction, has grown significantly, all while improving safety and delivering record safety results in recent years. The company’s global 2012 and 2013 safety performances, as measured by incidence rates, tied as the safest marks in company history, building from year-over-year improvements. Peabody earned 12 major safety honors in 2013.”
