Lung cancer in WA miners research gets funding boost

Research to determine the risk of lung cancer among West Australian miners and a study that compares the long-term health outcomes of naltrexone implants with other therapies are among projects to share in $1.7million in State Government research grants.

Health Minister Kim Hames said the Department of Health Targeted Research Fund (TRF) grants were established in 2011 to fund projects that focused on addressing issues that had an impact on the health of West Australians.

Nine projects have been selected from 50 applications to receive TRF grants ranging from $87,000 to $320,000.

“Importantly each of these projects has the potential to improve the delivery and effectiveness of health services in this State,” Dr Hames said.

“The nine successful projects were chosen from 50 applications following a rigorous selection process conducted by a panel made up of WA Health and research professionals and a health consumer representative.

“I congratulate the recipients and am optimistic that many West Australians will benefit from their work in the future.”
