The driver of a four wheel drive had a lucky escape after a train carrying manganese ploughed into his vehicle near Katherine in the Northern Territory.
According to the NT News, the train was hauling manganese from Bootu Creek mine, 110km north of Tennant Creek, to Darwin when the incident happened around 1am yesterday.
Speaking to the NT News, Police Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said the driver of the train was receiving treatment for shock while the driver of the vehicle apparently (and surprisingly) escaped unharmed.
“It appears a bloke tried to drive over the tracks where there was no crossing,” she said.
Greg Pauline, Managing Director of Genesee and Wyoming, operators of the train service, told the NT News he was relieved that nobody was injured.
“The worst thing for a driver is not knowing if someone is in the car,” he said.
After impact, the train dragged the vehicle for around one kilomotre, over the edge of Katherine River high level bridge.
It’s believed the driver of the four wheel drive was not in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
