Mine workers wanted for men’s health study

Mine workers from the northern Bowen Basin are being asked to take part in a men’s health study aimed at discovering why men’s health is much poorer than women’s in the Mackay region.

FIFO and DIDO workers from the towns of Sarina, Dysart, Clermont, Moranbah, Collinsville, Bowen, Proserpine and Mackay are particularly wanted for the survey.

The Working Men’s Health Study has been developed by doctors at the Mackay Base Hospital Emergency Department with support from the JCU Northern Clinical Training Network (NCTN).

Emergency Department Medical Officer at Mackay Base Hospital, Megan Purvey, said “We see many men in the emergency department who suffer serious illness. Many are unaware that they are even at risk,”

“Often the men we treat can’t tell us who their GP is, or when they last saw a doctor.”

Emergency medicine consultant Dan Britton said attitude might have a role to play in the poor state of men’s health.

“North Queenslanders have this type of tough male attitude that we can just work through it, tough it out,” he said.

“And that is actually not the case. The point is that we’re not looking after ourselves.

“Looking after ourselves is not only good for us but also for our kids and families.

“We need to do a better job.”

The online survey takes about 10 minutes and participants  can withdraw at any stage.

While information gained during the study may be published, no personally identifying information is being collected. All information is anonymous and confidential.

The survey is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/survey4men.
