NSW Mine Safety will host a series of safety workshops in February and March to educate the industry on proposed new design and performance standards for diesel engine systems used in underground coal mines in the state.
The new performance standards are being proposed to minimise the potential risk of igniting methane or coal dust and the potential risk of fire from the use of diesel engine systems.
The workshops will be presented in two stages: Stage 1 – introduction to functional safety for mining plant and Stage 2 – application of functional safety to mining plant.
The workshops will be held at the Mine Safety Technology Centre in Thornton, NSW, and will look at the two broad concepts of control measures – safety components and safety functions.
Stage 1 will be held on 17-18 February and Stage 2 on 23-25 March. More workshops are planned for later in the year.
