New research shows that over one in five (21%) of all employees rate their overall sleep as either extremely poor, very poor or poor.

Authors of the research report, GCC Insights, surveyed over 285,000 employees from over 1,200 organisations to develop a picture of how sleep deprivation affects the workplace.

The report found that, “Sleep-deprived employees are associated with increased economic and healthcare costs as well as decreases in productivity and increased safety risks.”

“The modern workplace has increasingly developed a misguided culture over recent decades, promoting a link between sleeplessness and high performance. Sleep is as essential as oxygen, food or water and when it is compromised it is no different to starving the body and mind of these other essential elements.”

“For shift workers, that good night’s sleep needs to occur during the day, which is harder to achieve and yet statistically even more important in the context of reducing risk.”

“Human Resources departments across the world are waking up to the role sleep plays in the health, engagement and performance of their employees. Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS) is a term that may not have been widely spoken about much until now, but it’s increasingly being recognised as a critical contributor to lower productivity and poorer mental health in the workplace.”
