Port Hedland Wharf Worker Has Leg Amputated

A worker who was rushed to hospital after being involved in Monday’s accident at Roy Hill’s Port Hedland Wharf has had his leg amputated.

Port Hedland Seafarers Association chaplain Alan Mower told  The West Australian that the Portugese national also sustained a broken pelvis and compound fractures to his other leg in the incident.

The other man injured in the incident is reported to also be suffering from compound fractures in one leg.

The accident happened just before midday on Monday 23 February when the two men were moving equipment aboard the Norwegian ship, Happy Buccaneer, according to The West Australian. It’s believed a spreader beam fell on the two men resulting in the severe crush injuries.
While the incident happened at Roy Hill’s wharf,  the company says neither the men or the ship have any involvement with the Roy Hill project.

Both men were immediately taken to the Hedland Health Campus and were later flown to Perth for further treatment by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is currently investigating the incident.
