Qld miners may lose compo for travel injuries

Queensland miners injured on their way to and from work could soon lose the right to workers compensation as WorkCover Queensland looks to reign in the spiraling cost of claims.

The Courier Mail reports that The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) is putting pressure on Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie to introduce the reforms to stop the system being rorted by staff.

The CCIQ says journey and recess claims last year cost the WorkCover scheme $50 million for 6000 cases, and that the proposed reforms would help business reduce their insurance premiums.

The CCIQ is also pushing for reforms that would prevent staff from suing employers for minor work-related injuries.

Queensland Council of Unions president John Battams, said he was alarmed by the talk on the grapevine, however the Attorney-General said no definite decision had yet been made.

“The Government is currently considering a report from the Inquiry into the Operation of Queensland’s Workers’ Compensation Scheme,” Mr Bleijie said.

The recent legislated Parliamentary Committee review recommended that journey claims and the right to sue remain.

Mr Battams told the Courier Mail that workers would be the losers is the reforms went through.

“The nature of our state is that people have to travel long distances to get to work on bad roads,” he said, “Many of them have no choice.”
