Dear Industry colleagues,

On behalf of the Conference Committee, I invite and encourage you to attend what promises to be an outstanding 35th Annual Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference (QMIHSC) at The Star, Gold Coast from Sunday 18 to Wednesday 21 August 2024.

With the theme “Back to the future” we will explore if the simplicity of the past can work in harmony with advancements in the present, to navigate safely, a complex and evolving future.

The Conference will aim to explore, and challenge you to reflect on questions such as-

  • Have technology and futuristic methods simplified our industry for the positive, or introduced new risk?
  • Will the removal of human interaction dilute our skill in safety and health risk identification?
  • Is our industry now too complex or exactly where it needs to be on the transformation curve?
  • Is there a place for the simpler processes of the past to co-exist with new technology and ways of work?
  • Continuing from last year’s conference theme “Inside looking out”, have we looked outside for learnings when designing and implementing technology and change programs, to ensure we are not repeating mistakes of the past whilst transitioning to the future?

The 2024 program and 35th QMIHSC, will continue to grow on the success of the 2023 conference and 33 previous conferences, with more “tools to add to your toolbox”.

We value delegate feedback and have utilised data from 2023 to design our streamlined program and select a variety of keynote speakers.  Content will be relevant to industry’s changing health, wellbeing and safety landscape, cover current and future matters, and cater to our diverse delegate cohort.

Extended interactions between our keynotes and delegates were positively embraced last year, and will be continued in 2024, with opportunities to engage one-on-one in the Exhibition Marquee during designated breaks, in addition to the in-session Q&A.

We encourage delegates to share knowledge, expertise and insights into important health and safety matters with keynotes and other delegates. As stated by psychologist and author Peter Shepherd “Communication is the solvent of all problems and is the foundation for personal development”.

Beyond the quality program on offer, I am delighted to announce that last year’s Health Program Award Winner, ManUp Australia , will be the 2024 recipient of the Monday night informal dinner appeal auction. In an improvement to last year’s appeal, we will be opening up the auction online prior to the conference to maximise your bidding opportunities, so please dig deep to support this worthy cause for the early detection of prostate cancer, a cause that has already saved the lives, and supported the families, of many in our industry.

Watch our socials and be sure to register your interest via our website for regular updates. For those who have attended in the past, please promote the conference within your network so we continue to welcome new delegates to share in this important learning experience.

If you have “on the job” experiences to share with industry, please consider registering for speaking opportunities and/or nominate for the innovation and health awards.

Australia’s premier Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference for 2024 is just around the corner. On behalf of the enthusiastic and dedicated Committee, we look forward to seeing you in August!
