The Southern Institute of Technology is pleased to be able to offer this NZQA accredited diploma through its flexible delivery faculty, SIT2LRN. As long as you have access to the internet, you can study and complete this Diploma in the comfort of your own home or work site.
Occupational health and safety specialists work to control, eliminate or prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, radiological, or biological components in the workplace. Jobs they may do include: recommend ergonomic programs and techniques; conduct inspections to evaluate current practices; or provide training to other staff. The specific responsibilities of occupational health and safety specialists vary by industry, workplace and type of hazards affecting employees. Whatever the setting, the initial focus is on identifying hazardous conditions and practices.
This is a practical Diploma geared to be relevant in the workplace, and students are required to have access to a workplace where they can undertake the practical components of the programme (e.g. hazard registers and identification).
People awarded this qualification will have demonstrated that they have taken responsibility for managing occupational health and safety practice in their industry.
The Diploma is 125 credits and made up of 6 NZQA unit standards. You can study either full-time or part-time, whichever best suits you. Each year, all units are offered four times a year, in 17 week blocks, in order to assist you in structuring your study around your work and family life. Studying with SIT2LRN also means that you can take your study with you wherever you are, and you never have to take time off, or incur travel expenses, to attend classes or workshops.
Each of the units and respective learning outcomes are listed below. As a study guideline, you can expect to spend approximately 10 learning hours per credit studied. So, for example, if you choose to do a 20 credit unit in one 17 week block, you can expect to be spending approximately 12 hours per week studying.
US5615 – Occupational Health and Safety Practice (20 credits)
On successful completion of this unit the learner should be able to:
- Identify and assess systems
- Determine aspects of systems needing development
- Develop strategies for improvements.

US5617 – Facilitate hazard management in an occupational health and safety practice (30 credits)
On successful completion of this unit the learner should be able to:
- Undertake an investigation to identify hazards
- Prioirtise hazards
- Employ a range of controls
- Monitor the Hazard Management system.
- Cost: $3,000(NZ)
US5620 – Evaluate Occupational Health and safety Standards and Practice (30 credits)
On successful completion of this unit the learner should be able to:
- Plan a health and safety management systems audit
- Conduct a health and safety management systems audit
- Document and report results
- Cost: $3,000(NZ)
US5621 – Plan and evaluate programs to promote occupational health and safety practice (20 credits)
On successful completion of this unit the learner should be able to:
- Identify and access sources of information
- Analysis information
- Develop program strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of work related injury and illness
- Evaluate actions and program
- Identify and locate resources adequate for the program

US5616 – Manage hazard identification and control for occupational health and safety practice (10 credits)
On successful completion of this unit the learner should be able to:
- Identifying hazards
- Assessing the significance of hazards
- Implementing prescribed control strategies
- Monitoring hazards and the hazard management system
- Cost: $1,000(NZ)
US5619 – Assist evaluating occupational health and safety standards and practice (15 credits)
On successful completion of this unit the learner should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of key New Zealand health and safety management standards
- Assist in planning a health and safety management standards
- Assist in planning a health and safety management systems audit
- Assist in conducting a health and safety management systems audit
- Assist in documenting and reporting results
