Petroleum and gas injuries have almost doubled in past year

iron roughneck_scaled75 workplace injuries were reported in Queensland’s petroleum and gas industry during the 2012-13 financial year, according to Queensland’s Department of Natural Resources and Mines.

The figure represents an alarming increase of 35, almost double the amount recorded in the 2011-12 financial year.

The Department claims drilling continues to be a key area of concern and a major focus for the mines inspectorate as the majority of the injuries on drilling rigs are serious including crushing injuries of fingers and hands.

Approximately 36% of inspections during 2012-2013 resulted in non compliances similar to results from the previous year. During 2012-13, 374 compliance directions and six dangerous situation directions were issued.

Investigations have resulted in five matters referred for prosecution with nine complaints issued. Three prosecutions have been finalised and two are remaining.
