A coal revival will be accelerated in Queensland’s Darling Downs region.
The State Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water recently approved the $896 million New Acland Coal Stage 3 Expansion, 53km northwest of Toowoomba.
An internal review agreed to quickly grant water licences for the project on 28 March 2023.
“I have reviewed all relevant materials as they relate to the decision and have decided to confirm the original decision,” the department said according to the Australian Associated Press.
“Following this review I am satisfied that the decision is the appropriate decision in accordance with the Water Act 2000.”
New Hope Group applauded the government’s decision, and expects earthwork and operations to be fast-tracked at the mine site.
Heavy machinery preparations have reached the final stages with more than 100 employees already mobilised.
When the project ramps-up a total of 600 workers will be required. Prospective contractors and suppliers are also needed.

First coal is likely to be shipped sometime in October 2023.
