A former remote employee has been charged with fatally striking a female.

Shaun Robert Sturgess was formally accused of instantly killing a woman with a 1.8 kilo sledgehammer in southeast Queensland.

Sturgess allegedly consumed large amounts of alcohol and accused wife Jacqueline, 45, of financially exploiting him. The fly-in fly-out worker then reportedly hailed a taxi and delivered a heavy blow to his victim at the home study desk in April 2020, according to the Australian Associated Press.

Prosecutor Chris Cook claimed the 50-year-old attacker disposed of the sledgehammer in nearby bushland before proceeding to a local bottle shop. Sturgess later caught a taxi to a friend’s home and expressed remorse about an earlier domestic argument over child support.

Defence barrister Chris Wilson urged jury members to reserve judgment until all evidence is presented.

The Brisbane Supreme Court trial continues.
