A mineral producer is proceeding with a major resources development worth US$943 million ($1.4 billion).

BHP’s board of directors recently gave the nod for its new Western Ridge Crusher Project, 488km south of Port Hedland.

The project involves constructing a new 30M tonnes per annum (Mtpa) primary crusher and a 12km overland conveyor to transport ore from the Mount Helen and Silver Knight deposits to the Newman West ore processing hub. New ore processing and transportation infrastructure will also be required.

First production is expected during the first quarter of the 2027 financial year. An average of 25 Mtpa of iron ore product will be delivered for a total of 12 years.

“We expect to award more than US$45M (A$68.6M) in contracts to local and Indigenous businesses – both via BHP direct and indirect engagements. This will achieve significant social value for the communities in which we operate,” BHP WA Iron Ore asset president Tim Day said in a public statement.
