Six sets of safety rules around the handling of dangerous goods in Western Australia will soon be rolled into one under a new program of legislation reform.
Announcing the wide-ranging reforms last week, Mines Minister Bill Marmion said the changes would sharpen the focus on safety.
“Safety remains our top priority,” Mr Marmion said.
“These changes will modernise and streamline processes, while meeting the needs of operators and regulators.”
Earlier this year the Minister commissioned a review into the Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004, involving consultation with industry and government agencies.
“Following this consultation the review made 16 recommendations, from which the Department of Mines and Petroleum prepared a detailed implementation plan,” he said.
“While dangerous goods regulations will be simplified into a single set of rules, the aim is to maintain and improve standards.
“These are risk-based and outcomes-focused changes, in line with safety reforms the Liberal National Government has introduced across the State’s resources industry.”
Improvements will include creation of a dangerous goods digital portal to improve transparency and speed up information flow and licencing.
Implementation of the review’s recommendations is under way and will take up to three years to complete.
