A mining materials company will be questioned about a major failure.
SafeWork is widely expected to examine what caused a 42 metre tall domesilo to suddenly collapse at Hallett Group’s Port Adelaide Distribution Hub, 14km northwest of the CBD.
Workers are suspected of making a critical error while erecting the 52,000 tonne capacity structure.
“As is required by law Hallett reported the incident to Safework SA and is cooperating with the Safework SA investigation whilst conducting its own investigation, together with the primary contractor constructing the dome silo and the dome skin manufacturer,” a company spokesperson said in a public statement.
“Whilst the investigation is ongoing Hallett can confirm that there is clear evidence of an incorrect step in the construction process that has led to the dome skin failure. Hallett is working with all parties to address this issue and any other issues that may arise through the investigation.”
The broader project also includes building a 15,000 tonne flexible supplementary cementitious material storage shed with both “blending and distribution functionality”. The proponent promises construction will end “on time and on budget” during 2024.
“The dome manufacturer has already commenced the manufacture of a new air form skin, and Hallett is expecting to be in a position to resurrect the dome skin air form in approximately three to four weeks,” the spokesperson said.
“No harm came to any of our people or other stakeholders as a result of this event.”
