Procurement will be accelerated if there is no change in government.

The ruling Liberal Party of New South Wales confirmed it would appoint a supply chain commissioner if it wins the next state election on 25 March 2023.

The new role is promised to fast-track procurement through identifying supply chain and rail freight bottlenecks.

The State Government will also invest $1 billion in upgrading roads, freight and transport infrastructure. This is promised to improve network capacity and reliability.

“The faster we can do that at a cheaper price the better,” State Premier Dominic Perrottet said according to the Procurement and Supply Australasia website.

However, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) warned the strategy would encourage employers to cut costs, which might compromise heavy vehicle operator safety.

“The squeeze on transport contracts puts pressure on operators and drivers to delay truck maintenance and repairs, skip rest breaks, speed and drive fatigued,” TWU NSW and Queensland secretary Richard Olsen said according to the NCA NewsWire.

“There is no fat to cut from razor-thin transport margins from which wealthy clients already reap massive gains.”
