A cutting-edge equipment maker unveiled one of the world’s first zero-emissions mine machines.

Epiroc recently appointed project development group Skanska to begin field testing the SmartROC T35E battery-electric drill for surface operations.

The rig is fitted with multiple 12 volt 185 amp hours batteries, and also an electric cord for continuous operation even after stored energy reserves are depleted. This is promised to reduce emissions, noise and vibrations.

Various smart features, options and enhanced automation solutions have been added for “optimal safety, reliability, and performance”. The equipment was manufactured in Örebro, 202km west of the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

“Both companies have set bold environmental goals – this project really takes a great step towards Skanska’s goal of being completely climate neutral by 2045, which is an important part of our promise to build a better society,” Skanska Industrial Solutions project manager Johan Eliasson said in a public statement.

Epiroc aims to have an emissions-free underground mining equipment fleet by the year 2025, and a net-zero surface operations fleet five years later.
