Tasmania embraces sustainable development goals

Tasmania has made a major stride towards a brighter and more sustainable future by aligning strategies and operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). What makes this alignment so pivotal for Tasmania?

SDGs present a comprehensive framework that ensures a beneficial impact on people, the planet and prosperity. This framework is in harmony with the ethos of the Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC), which is committed to:
elevating safety, health, and wellbeing outcomes for its workforce, contractors, suppliers, and communities they serve
diligently reducing the adverse effects of their operations, products, and historical actions on the environment.
amplifying the economic potential of various sectors within Tasmania.

By synchronising with SDGs, Tasmania not only bolsters its industries but also casts a positive ripple effect on the wider local and global populace. To fortify this commitment, TMEC has joined forces with the Tasmanian enterprise, SDG Align, to unveil a toolkit. This toolkit is meticulously crafted to aid members in aligning their operations seamlessly with the SDGs.

Delving into the 17 sustainable development goals

Unveiled by the United Nations in 2015, the SDGs, colloquially termed the Global Goals, encompass 17 intertwined objectives. These goals are designed to address a myriad of social, economic and environmental challenges that the world grapples with, laying down a blueprint for a more equitable and sustainable future. The ambition is to realise these goals by the year 2030.

These goals span a range of areas, from the eradication of poverty and hunger to championing quality education, gender equality, and tackling climate change. They underscore the urgent challenges that humanity confronts today. By adopting an integrated approach, the SDGs accentuate the interconnectedness of these challenges, necessitating a collective effort for their resolution.

How can enterprises play their part?

The toolkit, introduced by TMEC, is designed to spur businesses to introspect on their impact. It endeavours to guide businesses in minimising their negative footprints while magnifying the positive ones. While numerous larger industries have seamlessly incorporated these goals into their decision-making paradigms, the toolkit ensures that enterprises, irrespective of their size, can effortlessly do the same.

This toolkit boasts a customised dashboard, empowering businesses to cherry-pick and prioritise actions, set timelines and curate a shareable report for stakeholders. In the ensuing months, TMEC, in collaboration with SDG Align, will fine-tune the toolkit’s actions to ensure they resonate with the Tasmanian industrial milieu and their strategic blueprints.

TMEC ardently encourages businesses to embark on this transformative journey, to acknowledge the positive strides they are already making, and to pinpoint new initiatives they can undertake. With Tasmania already boasting a net zero achievement, there is a plethora of accomplishments to take pride in. This alignment with the SDGs will further bolster Tasmania’s pledge to sustainable and quantifiable actions.
