3000 dangerous goods security cards due to expire in July

Thousands-of-dangerous-goods-security-cards-due-for-renewal-LARGEWith more than 3000 dangerous goods security cards due to expire in July, and several thousands more over the following months, Western Australia’s Department of Mines and Petroleum is reminding card holders to renew their security cards to avoid losing their security clearance.

DMP Executive Director for Resources Safety Simon Ridge said individuals who do not have a valid dangerous goods security card will not be permitted to transport ammonium nitrate or have unsupervised access to explosives or ammonium nitrate.

“If individuals do not submit their security card renewal by the expiry date, their security clearance will expire,” Mr Ridge said.

“In addition, any personal explosives related licences, such as shot firing licences, will automatically be cancelled.”

New applications for security clearances must be made through Australia Post and usually take more than eight weeks to process.

“This could have significant consequences on employment or business activities,” Mr Ridge said.

People can renew their cards online, as well as through the post or in person.

Card holders should receive a renewal notice and verification code in the mail two months prior to when the card is due to expire.

Dangerous goods security cards were first introduced in 2008 in response to counter-terrorism measures established by the Council of Australian Governments.

Cards must be renewed every five years.
