A family drive for excellence fuel success

B&R Enclosures was founded by Dick Bridges in 1955 to specialise in the fabrication of enclosures for domestic electrical metering equipment. Since that time, B&R has dedicated itself to strategically growing the company, adding manufacturing facilities and incorporating state of the art design techniques to increase the range, availability, quality and value of their product lines.

Now under the direction of the founder’s son, Ken Bridges, B&R has grown to be the largest manufacturer of domestic, commercial and industrial enclosures in Australia today.

Today B&R encompasses four divisions B&R Industrial, B&R Data Systems, B&R Domestic Commercial trading through joint venture Hager B&R and B&R Ex Systems Pty Ltd each of which focus on the unique needs of different market segments.

B&R Industrial is responsible for the manufacture and supply of enclosures to the industrial and mining segments. B&R Domestic Commercial services the domestic and commercial segments through a joint venture company Hager B&R. B&R Data Systems specialises in data centre infrastructure for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) market. While B&R Ex Systems specialises in the supply of IEC Ex certified enclosures, lighting, control stations and customised switchgear assemblies to the hazardous area market. Together these divisions share the strengths, resources and experience of the founding company to provide attentive customer service, innovative design and superior quality products.

As an Australian family owned and operated manufacturer B&R Enclosures continually faces the challenge of foreign products flooding the market. B&R has been able to maintain its manufacturing position in the market by ensuring their enclosures are of a superior standard in both quality and design.

Ben Bridges, B&R’s Marketing Manager believes being an Australian manufacturer has both its difficulties and advantages.

“We are competing in a market with low barriers of entry from imported alternatives, but we are able to maintain our position by ensuring our enclosures are of a higher standard in quality and design. The benefits of being an Australian manufacturer is we are able to understand applications and conditions offering quick turnaround times and customisation of our products has assisted us winning major projects,” Bridges said.

B&R Enclosures has developed a unique understanding of Australian standards and regional authority specifications and designed its standard products to meet the vast majority of requirements. If the standard enclosures and configuration options do not meet a customer’s needs, B&R’s team of engineers can design a custom made product to fit the requirements of any application. B&R Enclosures continues to invest heavily in design and manufacturing technologies to ensure the products offered are at the cutting edge of the industry. New products are continually being developed and existing products are enhanced to meet the changing needs of their customers.

B&R is committed to building quality into each stage of design, manufacture and distribution. This commitment is demonstrated by the company’s dedication to continuous process improvements, state of the art facilities and excellent customer support. B&R’s highly-experienced engineers, technicians and operators continuously enhance their abilities through the company’s investment in education, training and skills development. Quality is assured with certification to ISO 9001:2008.

Their commitment to quality goes past the factory floor, it extends to all areas of the business and B&R Enclosures believe that investing in people and training is equally as important as the latest manufacturing technologies. B&R employ over 300 people Australia wide in various areas including engineering, manufacturing, distribution, accounts, marketing and sales.

“Within B&R today we have many staff who have been with the company over 10, 20, 30 and 40 years – these are the people who have the corporate knowledge and skills that make our business. The B&R culture has proven to be one that draws dedicated and loyal employees,” Ken Bridges said.

B&R Enclosures is continually developing its product range and manufacturing facilities to ensure they offer customers products best suited to their needs using the latest technology. The addition of a manufacturing facility in China will see B&R Enclosures realise their goal of being the chosen supplier of enclosures both nationally and internationally.
