Change of guard at Coal Services

Paul Healey

Coal Services will soon welcome a new General Manager and a new Coal Mines Technical Services (CMTS) Manager with both Paul Healey and Peter Mason announcing their retirement last week.

Matthew Fellowes will take over Paul Healey’s role as General Manager Mines Rescue and Regulation & Compliance and Brian Howell will replace Peter Mason as CMTS Manager.

Paul Healey spent 25 years working in open cut and underground operations before joining the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) as a Senior Inspector in 1998. He has spent the last six years steering the helm at Mines Rescue and Regulation & Compliance, for Coal Services.

Peter Mason has been building gas detectors and analysing underground samples with the Coal Mines Technical Services (CMTS) team for over 30 years. Today, Peter is considered one of the world’s leading experts on underground gases and spontaneous combustion.

Throughout their careers, both Paul and Peter have made significant contributions to the mining industry. Both have advised on multiple mine emergencies including Pike River and Blakefield.

In reflecting on his retirement, Paul says ‘at the end of the journey it is satisfying to look back with pride on being part of a team that has made a difference. The NSW coal industry is safer and better protected as a result of the prevention, preparation and mitigation provided by Coal Services. I have made some friends but more importantly met some committed people who really care about doing more than just a job.’
