Coal worker dies from electrocution

Roof bolting fatality
Roof bolting fatality

An underground employee passed away after accidentally coming into contact with voltage.

A roof bolter recently died from electrocution at Blackhawk Mining’s Kanawha Eagle Coal Mine, about 36km south of Charleston.

The worker received a lethal 480 volt shock after touching a metal hook that became energised while penetrating an electrical power cable that was connected to a roof bolting machine on 1 September 2022.

Mine safety investigators made the following recommendations:

  • use suitable, non-conductive ropes when pulling or handling electrical cables
  • use insulated gloves and other proper personal protective equipment when handling cables
  • never attach conductive parts, such as metallic hooks, to non-conductive rope sections that come into contact with electrical cables.
