Mining scholarships on offer to students across the Hunter

The NSW Minerals Council and participating member companies are inviting eligible students entering Year 11 across the Hunter to apply for a 2014 NSW Mining Scholarship.

“Our scholarships program provides financial support for young people looking for a career in the NSW mining industry, and also helps ensure our industry can meet its skills needs into the future,” NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said today.

“As well as receiving financial help, successful applicants will engage in mining related activities and have contact with the industry and stakeholders like sponsoring companies and universities,” Mr Galilee said.

The scholarships are open to students from eligible schools across the Hunter studying minerals related subjects like maths and science in Year 11/12 and considering entering a mining related course at university.

Potential university subjects can include, but are not limited to Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mining, Environmental), Geology, Geoscience, IT, Health and Safety, Surveying, Legal, Operations and Environmental Science. More examples are at www.peopleforthefuture.com.au

NSW Mining Scholarship recipients receive $500 for successful completion of Year 11 and $1,000 for successful completion of Year 12. A further $2,000 is granted to those who successfully complete their first year in an undergraduate minerals related course at a NSW university within 12 months of completing high school.

In 2013, the program supported 82 students across NSW and we expect a similar number in 2014.

Companies involved in 2014 include Alkane Resources, BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal, BHP Billiton NSW Energy Coal, Bloomfield Collieries, Iluka Resources, Newcrest Mining – Cadia Valley Operations, Peabody Energy Australia, Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania, Thiess – Mount Owen and Vale Australia.
