New Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue website launched

weather-forecastingA new Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue website has been launched, aimed at providing the community with access to more information and news on important projects currently underway and to address some challenges of mining in the Upper Hunter.

The new website miningdialogue.com.au has been developed by The Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue in response to requests from Dialogue participants. The website contains live information about air quality, local weather forecasts, project updates and papers from the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue’s working groups and contact details for the region’s mine operators and regulators.

The Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue is a collaboration between around 75 community groups, local government and business, regulators and local coal producers to identify issues and develop and implement projects to address them.

The website also makes it easier for the community to know who to contact when they want to talk to someone or raise a concern about a local mining operation, with contact details for all nine local mine producers and regulators together in the same place for the first time.

“We’ve been working closely with around 100 people in the Dialogue and they’ve told us that more people need to hear about the progress that is being made. This new website provides access to information and contact details for mines and regulators,” NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said.

“Good progress is being made through the Dialogue, giving us a better understanding of regional air quality, local housing and infrastructure needs and waterland management challenges. We’re starting to see results from some of the 15 projects being implemented to address these challenges.”

Current projects include a grazing study on rehabilitated mine land and a weather forecasting pilot project to help miners better plan their operations and reduce dust emissions. This new forecasting system, being trialled in conjunction with Weatherzone, was agreed by one of the Dialogue’s joint working groups and aims to provide a more consistent use of forecasts across all Upper Hunter mine sites.

A new e-news service is also being launched alongside the website. Anyone can register for updates on the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue at miningdialogue.com.au
