Central Highlands mine worker was farewelled after almost four decades in the job.
Cameron Cocks recently hanged his hard hat for the last time after serving 38 years at BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s Blackwater Coal Mine in Stewarton, 220km west of Rockhampton.
The maintenance employee, affectionately known as “Cocksy”, began his career as a mechanical fitter in 1984.
“[I was a] young fella a couple years out of my trade with a young family,” he recalled.
He later transferred to maintenance planning then mechanical reliability where almost everyone saw him.
“You have always been a common face when I came back to Blackwater, and you have always been someone that if I needed to know something I can go to and actually get the history of why it is like that, and where it has come from – and you have a memory like no other I have ever seen,” maintenance manager Justin Sloper said at Cocks’ farewell party.
Cocks plans to go on long service leave before completely retiring. He will miss working with “really great people”.
“Congratulations on your retirement, Cameron – and thank you for your many years’ service and commitment to not only Blackwater mine but the surrounding community,” a spokesperson said in a public statement.
