The Miner’s Guide to Managing Stress

Mining is an old profession that has only recently been given the respect and credibility that it deserves. It comes with some incredible risks, from roof falls, to black lung, and as a result can be quite stressful for the average person. Managing stress is important. Though in Australia, you likely won’t be mining as a result of human trafficking or otherwise are underground digging due to a human rights violation, that doesn’t mean your life is always going to be perfect.

You need to care for your mental health and wellbeing as much as you would care for your physical wellbeing. Both sides are necessary when you want to help manage stress:

Boost Your Health Right at Home

If you haven’t already taken all the steps you can to improve your health at home, start today. Though health and safety standards have improved vastly since the early days of mining, that doesn’t mean you can skimp off on not caring for your body. Some ways to improve your health include:

 

  1. Eating Healthy Meals Healthy meals should be eaten at home and brought to work. Be experimental, make meals in advance, make cooking a social event – there are so many ways to make cooking and healthy eating more enjoyable.
  2. Improving Your Sleeping Experience To get a great night’s sleep on a regular basis, you will need to be strict with your night-time routines. Go to bed and wake up at the same hours, have the same pre-bed routine, and try to stay away from electronics for at least two hours before you want to sleep.
  3. Having Supportive Routines Supportive routines include your morning routine. Wake up with the same steps, eat the same healthy breakfast, and you can save energy and wake up much easier than before.

Pick Up Hobbies You Enjoy

Once your health has been looked after, it’s time to care for your mental health and wellbeing. What you need will depend entirely on who you are as a person. If you are someone who wants to enjoy excitement at every turn, then schedule a few new experiences every month. Or, perhaps, make use of the promotions over at Unibet to make a bet on your favourite team every time they play.

If you need to slow down, then pick up slower habits like cooking, reading, or gardening. Things that take time and attention to detail can really help you unwind after a hard day at work.

Try Something New

New tastes, new hobbies, new sights, new skills – learning or trying something new can do wonders towards improving your wellbeing and help you manage your stress. Your mind needs new challenges in order to thrive, and by trying out new things occasionally, you can give it this mental stimulation.

Get Out into Nature as Often as You Can

Though we build cities full of conveniences, nothing will stop us from being intimately connected to nature. Go on a hike every so often, or simply choose the scenic route going home every now and again.

Improving your wellbeing and picking up hobbies that will help you manage the stress of being a miner and allow you to a lead a much better live overall.
