A multinational mining company will not stop requiring everyone to be immunised before entering work sites.
BHP will continue to impose coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine requirements across all operations despite the Western Australian Government lifting jab mandates on June 10.
The voluntary decision means employees, contractors and visitors still have to show proof of vaccination when booking travel, being screened at airports and accessing mine sites. Jobseekers also must demonstrate they are immunised when applying to work for BHP. Booster shots are not required.
“Double vaccination as a condition of entry will remain in place for all of BHP’s Australian workplaces,” a company spokesperson said according to Seven West Media.
“Our policy does not require booster vaccinations for site access but we do encourage everyone to maintain an up-to-date vaccination status in line with Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation recommendations. Our COVID-19 health and safety measures are based on a thorough assessment of the latest scientific evidence and health advice, and we continue to review the effectiveness of those controls.”
The employer claims up to 3 per cent of its workforce is unvaccinated and these conscientious objections have not impacted on business performance.
“We did work very hard to try and work with people to try and stay inside our business, and having them leave the business really was a last resort for us,” BHP WA iron ore asset president Brandon Craig said according to the media outlet.
AMSJ independently checked BHP job advertisements and verified they still require full vaccination.
“BHP also requires employees in Australia to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people from the 31st of January 2022, or earlier, depending on relevant state health directives,” it said on the Seek website.
“If you are applying for a role at BHP please consider this new requirement when submitting your application. BHP will also adhere to any relevant health directives that may be made that affects our workforce.”
