Gender Diversity Policies Second Best, Survey Finds Mining and Resources Sector

Gender diversity policies have been rated second best among all industries by a survey

Based on a survey by a recruitment company of almost 6,000 people across all industries in Australia, the mining and resources sector has placed second for putting gender diversity policies in place.

In front of the industry sits the public and not-for-profit sector, which was named by 50 per cent of its employees as having a formal gender diversity policy in place in addition to formal practices.

The mining sector came second with 37 per cent, followed by financial services at 36 per cent.

Yet while the resources and mining indsutry came in second, it was near the bottom when it came to adhering to gender diversity policies. More than a fifth of working employees in the sector said formal gender diversity policies are not at all well-adhered to. Hays (the recruitment company) Australia and New Zealand’s managing director Nick Deligiannis said the industry has done a lot when it comes to developing policies that will attract and retain talented female employees.”But it seems the industry is failing at a practical level to implement these policies. Managers on the ground need to action these policies if they are to have any real impact,” he said.

“Employers should take notice of the gender diversity leaders in their industry because there are real benefits to be gained from ensuring your female talent is free from inequality and can progress equally to their male counterparts. Of course their own career benefits, but the organisations they work for also benefit from having the best person in the best job – regardless of gender – and retaining them by rewarding both genders equally.”
