A multinational mineral producer ordered every employee to leave their posts immediately at a Central West operation.

Newcrest Mining recently evacuated underground workers at its Cadia Hill Mine in Panuara, 28km south of Orange.

“The evacuation was due to instability in one of Cadia’s vent rises. All personnel were unharmed and many are continuing work in other areas of the operation,” mine general manager Aaron Brannigan said according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The proponent also suspended subterranean work on 22 July 2022 for remote visual assessments and remediation.

“Activities are underway to remediate instability identified in a ventilation rise at its Cadia mine, which are not expected to impact fiscal 2023 production. All surface activities remain operational, with significant surface stockpiles available for processing well into September 2022,” a spokesperson said in a public statement.

“Underground mining has been temporarily suspended and is expected to recommence in the coming weeks, once works to safely backfill the rise have been completed.”

The company claims the measures will help ensure employees safely return to duties.

“Newcrest is taking an appropriately precautionary approach to monitoring and resolving this issue, with a strong commitment to keeping our people and the community safe,” the spokesperson said.

The New South Wales Environment Protection Authority and state Resources Regulator discovered water had flowed from an aquifer into the ventilation tunnel.

Cadia Road was temporarily closed due to the incident.
