Roma to tackle safety with Mal Meninga over breakfast

MalMeningaRoma workers and employers are being invited to join rugby league legend and State of Origin Coach Mal Meninga at a special work health and safety event in Roma on Wednesday (30 April) – the first time this kind of event on this scale has been held in Queensland outside of a major city.

Safety Ambassador Mal said that the community breakfast would be a fun morning with signed giveaways, but there would also be a serious message about why everyone needs to work together to help improve work health and safety.

The breakfast will include trade displays from local companies, free health checks, safety demonstrations and entertainment. Quad bikes will be firmly in the spotlight after a spate of deaths this year in Queensland. The breakfast will feature live demonstrations of safe quad bike use, and the launch of a case study film that shows how quickly things can go wrong if even the most experienced riders make rash decisions.

After the breakfast, local businesses attending a seminar at the Explorers Inn will hear from industry experts and workers who have survived serious injuries. Miles Paterson and Tiffany Ward both came close to paying the ultimate price for a moment’s inattention to work safety, and both have taken that lesson to heart.

Mal will discuss the importance of leadership to driving a positive work health and safety culture, and the benefits to the bottom line that a safe workplace can bring. Based on accepted workers’ compensation claims, injured workers in Roma and the surrounding regions take up to one and a half times longer than the state average to return to work after an injury. In real time this equates to six weeks compared to the state average of four. When business is tight, two weeks without a worker can be a very long time.

Other speakers at the seminar include:

  • David Foote, CEO Australian Country Choice sharing his success on creating a positive workplace safety culture
  • Warwick Fraser sharing the motivation and the solutions behind the award winning solutions Frasers Livestock Transport implemented to make transferring cattle between vehicles safer, and less stressful for the animals.
  • Glen Cook, Ergon Energy on the dangers of fallen or low powerlines after storms or fires and accidental contact with power poles and low wires.
  • Shannon Ahern, Blue Care on the successful implementation of a work health and safety program.
  • Stephen Pearson, Santos on contractor engagement and working towards shared work health and safety standards in the coal seam gas industry.
  • Casandra Sorensen, DJ McCay Transport on the successful return to work of an injured worker.
  • Fiona O’Sullivan, WHSQ Inspector, joining her brother Miles Paterson to discuss quad bike safety and the incident that nearly took his life.

The breakfast is open to everyone – to be held 7 am to 10 am on Wednesday 30 April at the Cities Rugby League Football Club. The breakfast is proudly supported by Roma Transport Services (QLD) and our sponsors and safety partners.

The seminar will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Wednesday 30 April at the Roma Explorers InnRegistration is $33. It includes welcome tea and coffee and a light lunch.
