Supportive management key to preventing depression: new research

Safe Work Australia has released the report The relationship between work characteristics, wellbeing, depression and workplace bullying and its associated summary report. The research report was produced by Peter Butterworth, Liana Leach and Kim Kiely of the Centre for Research on Ageing, Health and Wellbeing at the Australian National University under commission from Safe Work Australia. The report is based on findings from a survey of 32-36 year olds in the Canberra and Queanbeyan areas.

Key findings of the report are:

  • certain workplace conditions and experiences can increase the risk of depression and subsequent consequences such as time away from work
  • workers with low levels of support from colleagues and managers were more likely to have depression than those who reported higher levels of support, and
  • workplace bullying was strongly associated with increased risk of depression

Both the report and summary are now available at http://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au
