Claims Qld gasfield death was waiting to happen

Gasfield operator, Saxon Energy, has strenuously denied claims that poor safety standards led to the death of an employee at their Fairfield gasfield in southern Queensland on Sunday.

An anonymous source told Roma’s Western Star that it was only a matter of time before someone was killed at the site.

“(The) issue was a known danger that nearly killed someone else,” the source said.

“We have unqualified, under-experienced men on all our rigs… anyone that comments gets fired.”

Saxon Energy’s State safety manager, Al Barrett, refuted the claims saying all Saxon employees had the proper qualifications and were supervised at all times.

“At the time of the incident our senior site supervisor was on duty to oversee all work conducted,” Mr Barrett said.

Mr Barrett said their immediate priority was to look after the family of the man and the company staff.

“We’ve also launched our own internal investigation but we expect that will take some time,” Mr Barrett said

Mr Barrett said Saxon Energy would continue to cooperate with police and other authorities as the matter is further investigated.

The 21-year-old male employee was a drill rig energy service worker at Rig 185 at the Fairview Santos GLNG operation site.
