SafeWork SA has launched a new program to help people who hold a temporary working visa to understand their
rights and responsibilities under South Australia’s work health and safety laws.
The information is available online and will also be distributed through Regional Development Australia Committees, employment agents and backpacker accommodation across the state.
The information aims to provide temporary working visa holders and their employers an overview of their rights, safety responsibilities and obligations.
“Work health and safety is anything but temporary and all workers need to know that they have the right to safe working conditions, to refuse unsafe work, to report unsafe conditions as well as receive fair pay,” said Marie Boland, A/Executive Director,
SafeWork SA.
“It is also important for workers to understand that they are required to take reasonable care to keep themselves safe, and not adversely affect the health and safety of others at work.
“One of the best ways for workers to gain information about the workplace is through an induction when they start a job. Showing people how to safely carry out their duties and what to do in an emergency is a great starting point,” she said.
“South Australia has a long tradition of welcoming people from around the world to work with us on a temporary basis, be it on farms, in vineyards, our hospitals or universities,” Ms Boland said.
