Workers trapped after Chinese mine collapse dead

Eleven workers trapped underground in a coal mine collapse have died, authorities in central China said yesterday.

According to a statement from Yulin city’s propaganda department, the miners were found Thursday afternoon, a day after the mine in Shaanxi province collapsed.

The other 49 miners working in the privately owned mine at the time of the incident escaped.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, but is one of many fatal collapses in recent weeks, including a Christmas Day incident in eastern Shandong that left one dead and 13 miners missing.
