A NSW project manager was fined $12,500 for not properly implementing a worksite safety plan, which resulted in a worker receiving serious head injuries when he fell through an unsecured penetration.
The worker, on a vocational rehabilitation program after being on long term unemployment benefits, had little experience
on a construction site, and was not wearing a helmet, gloves or proper boots at the time of the incident.
The Industrial Relation Commission (IRC) addressed many issues in their investigation which ranged from no established emergency procedures on-site, to not all workers completing the site induction.
All up, $197,500 in fines were handed out to the employee’s company, its Director, the self-employed Project Manager and the contracting organisation.
An incident like this reinforces the need for a current safety management system that is maintained, monitored, reviewed and improved on a regular basis.
