New Safety Guidelines for Coal Stockpiles and Tunnels Released

The NSW Government has just updated MDG 28 Safety requirements for coal stockpiles and reclaim tunnels with the new version now available online.

This guideline has been compiled to assist in identifying and controlling the risks associated with the use of dozers on coal stockpiles and coal recovery systems in reclaim tunnels.

It provides an industry benchmark for engineering standards and fit-for-purpose equipment and represents acceptable industry practice for reducing the risks associated with the use of this equipment.

MDG 28 is not a Code of Practice and at the date of issue no WHS Code of Practice covering its subject material has been developed for the NSW mining industry.
A number of Codes of Practice are being developed in consultation with industry, unions and other mining jurisdictions and as they are developed any corresponding NSW guidelines will be revised accordingly.

MDG 5002 C – Guideline for the use of remote controlled mining equipment in underground coal mines has been replaced by AS/NZS Remote control systems for mining equipment – Operation and maintenance for underground coal mining.

The MDG is no longer available on the department’s website. For guidance on the use of remote controlled equipment in underground coal mines please refer to the Standard.
