For the first time in its 20 year history, the annual Tasmanian Minerals Emergency Response Competition will be held in Tasmania’s south at Nyrstar, Hobart.
Tasmanian mine and smelter site emergency response teams will compete in events including first aid, fire fighting, team skills, road crash rescue, confined space rescue, underground search and rescue, rope rescue
and rescue theory on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 November.
John Lamb, Chairman of the Tasmanian Minerals Emergency Response Committee, said the goal of the competition is to ensure exposure to and practice of emergency care and response to the best possible
standard.
“Emergency response on mine and mineral processing sites involves volunteer teams of employees who train and prepare for all manner of emergency situations in potentially difficult environments. The competition is
an essential extension to the mining industry’s renowned focus on safety in the workplace,” Mr Lamb said.
“The competition provides an excellent learning opportunity and is one of the best practical ways in which teams can learn and gain valuable insight into alternate rescue methods from contact with other teams and
interaction with experienced adjudicators.”
Teams also contribute to the local community by responding to and assisting in road accident emergencies, national park and bush land fire protection and fire fighting and bushwalker rescues.
The competing teams include: Grange Resources (two teams), Bell Bay Aluminium, Unity Mining’s Henty Gold Mine, Bluestone’s Rension Mine Rescue, MMG Rosebery, Cornwall Coal and a Tasmanian Minerals
Emergency Response Committee team.
Members of the public are welcome to observe the Road Crash Rescue exercise and sponsor and supplier displays on Friday, 7 November.
