Ten killed in collapse at Zambian copper mining dump
LUSAKA – Ten people were killed and another 10 injured when a Zambian dump for copper mining waste collapsed on Wednesday, June 20. Informal “artisanal” miners have taken to re-excavating copper and other metals from the Black Mountain waste site in the town of Kitwe in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province.
In February the government’s mining investment arm gave a 10% stake in Black Mountain to such small-scale miners. The incident happened this morning and at least 10 people have been confirmed dead.
China mine collapses after truck blows up near the entrance in north-eastern Benxi prefecture
At least 11 people are dead and 25 remain trapped underground after a truck carrying explosives blew up near the entrance of an iron-ore mine in northeast China. The workers were drilling a mining shaft when the truck exploded just after 4pm on Tuesday, June 5.
Three miners killed in accident at Sibanye gold mine in South Africa
Three gold miners were killed in South Africa on 11th June at a Sibanye-Stillwater plant and the company said rescue teams are searching for two others. Sibanye said five employees entered an abandoned working place at its Kloof Ikamva mine near Johannesburg and were killed in an incident the company is investigating.
Another mineworker was killed on the site on June 26, taking the death toll at Sibanye-Stillwater mines to 21 for this year alone.
At Least 23 Killed In Mine Disasters In Pakistan
Twenty-three miners were killed and 11 were injured in separate incidents at two coal mines in southwest Pakistan in May. Pakistan’s director of disaster management said a blast caused by a build-up of methane gas in the Marwar coalfields in Balochistan Province led to the collapse of a mine, trapping many workers.
Seven miners were also killed after a mine collapsed in similar circumstances at Spin Carez. Mines in Pakistan are mostly owned by state-run Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation, which leases many of them to private contractors.

Barbour County man dies after accident at Randolph County coal mine
A man has died in Virginia USA, after an accident at a Randolph County coal mine. The man was struck in the head at the Morgan Camp Mine at approximately 12:20am on Tuesday June 5, according to the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training.
Ronald R. Taylor, a shuttle car operator, of Belington, was injured during the incident and flown from the mine to Ruby Memorial Hospital but pronounced dead later that day.
Mine collapse kills two in Morocco region hit by unrest
Two people aged 33 and 42 were killed at an abandoned mine in a north-eastern region of Morocco that has been hit by social unrest sparked by similar accidents. The accident happened when a shaft collapsed on the pair in the Sidi Boubker commune of Jerada province as they tried to mine lead. Moroccan authorities have vowed to close all abandoned mines in Jerada after months of social unrest in the former mining region.
4 killed in Quetta Pakistan coal mine incident
Four coal mine workers were killed on June 3rd when a part of a mine located in the Sanjadi area of Quetta Pakistan collapsed. Initial investigations reveal that the mine collapsed due to a gas explosion. Four bodies have been recovered from the debris, adding that the explosion also injured nine others.
