It’s True! The stairs are greener on the other side of the fence! – and there’s a good reason why! It’s likely they are using Amco’s new Nano55 Gripmaster Nosings! After being contacted by a leading mining company, requesting green anti-slip stair nosings, Amco dug a little deeper into the ‘why?’ behind this request…
It turns out that that to the human eye, it is a shade of green – and not yellow – that is the most visible in natural light and darker environments. This particular shade of green is 555 nanometers of light, a bright, almost lime, green. The human eye is most relaxed when looking at this shade, making it instantly recognizable without the strain caused by looking at other bright colors.
Amco made up a number of these nosings and trialed them in a variety of environments, including artificially lit areas at night. The below pictures speak for themselves… with red dirt quickly discoloring yellow cappings, the green stood out by a mile. So visible is this colour that you can place just one pixel of this green in 100,000 grey ones and you will still see it!
In an industry where yellow is the norm, rather than the exception, can we still call it a “hi-viz” colour? Blues or reds would stand out more on a mine or industrial site than the typical dirty yellow seen on handrails, toolboxes, hardhats, dozers, walls, warning signs (and more) that festoon these type of environments.
Not to say yellow doesn’t have its place… all would agree it’s easier to see a yellow jumbo than a grey one at coal mine in the Hunter, or a dirt red one in the Pilbara – but the stairs on a plant are a many, and it’s easy for fatigued operators to become disoriented and strained when looking at a sea of yellow and grey all day.
That’s why we don’t call our new Nano555 Nosings Hi-Viz, but rather HIGHER-Viz. In an industry that is typically the leaders in safety, this change is well overdue. Amco now offers all our GripMaster anti-slip products in the HIGHER-Viz green as standard, with the same 5 year warranty as its predecessor. Also like the standard GripMaster, it can be made in a gal, stainless 316 or Aluminium backing – and formed into ladder caps, stair nosings, plates and C-Stud for conveyor walkways and inclines.
