Carborough downs mine resumes after fatal accident

Fitzroy Australia Resources has confirmed in a statement that it has resumed coal mining operations at Carborough Downs mine following the fatal accident that claimed the life of veteran mine electrician Bard Duxbury.

The Company says its ‘ own internal processes, including a range of risk assessments, have been followed to allow operations to safely resume at the Carborough Downs site following the incident.

The company has also confirmed that the Fitzroy workforce, including contractors, continued to be employed, and paid as normal while mining operations were suspended.

Fitzroy said it continues to offer support to the family of Brad Duxbury and all members of the Carborough Downs team who have been affected by this tragedy.

While the details of the incident have not been confirmed by parties investigating the incident to date, AMSJ has been informed that Brad may have been struck by a significant fall of coal from the working face while replacing a pin on the Bretby (See Note 1). The nature of the fall of the face, the location of the bretby, isolations and the location from where he was struck from are reportedly the subject of further investigation.

Fitzroy Australia Resources said today that the “Queensland Mines Inspectorate’s investigation is ongoing, and we continue to cooperate fully with this process. As such, Fitzroy is unable to provide any further comment in relation to the incident.”

Notes

1. The “Bretby”  is a flexible carrier consisting of a series of flat “plates” usually of a plastic material connected in the form of a chain but which only flexes along its length, similar in appearance to tracks on a “caterpillar” driven machine but with a double row of plates. With the aid of pins on the outer edges, this forms a container which is flexible in one direction only (in a vertical plane when installed on the face).

Incidents involving Bretby’s – in 2007 a sheerer operator at a Queensland mine had his hand crushed by a bretby loop while removing spillage.
